3 Tips For Getting A Duplicate Title For Your Car

by Rick Mcguinness

If you are a car owner who does not have a copy of your vehicle's title, such as if you lost it at some point since you purchased it, then you might be thinking about getting a duplicate title. After all, you're going to need the title for your car for various things, such as putting your vehicle up for sale or using your car to take out a vehicle title loan. These are a few tips for car owners who are hoping to get a duplicate title for their vehicles.

1. Gather Up Documentation

First of all, you're probably going to need some documentation when it's time for you to get the duplicate title for your car. Bringing along your driver's license or other form of government ID is a good start. Also, you'll want to bring along any proof that you have that the vehicle is yours, such as a copy of the registration that has your name and address on it or a bill of sale from the person you purchased the vehicle from. If you aren't sure of what you need to get a duplicate title, consider calling your local title and registration office.

2. Be Prepared to Pay a Fee

You will probably be required to pay some type of fee when ordering a duplicate title for your car. Luckily, fees aren't usually too much, but you'll need to be prepared to pay when you apply for your duplicate title.

3. Keep it in a Safe Place

Once you get a duplicate title for your car, you'll want to make sure that you store it in the right place. Then, you can avoid losing it or damaging it, so you can avoid having to get another duplicate title later on. You do not usually need to keep your car's title in your car; instead, in your car, you should just need to have a copy of your registration and your car insurance information. Keeping your title at home is a good way to avoid losing it. For example, you could put it in your safe or in a drawer in your home office. Making a copy of it and storing it in a safe place as well is also smart, just in case you do accidentally lose or damage your original copy. Just be aware that you might not be able to use the copy of your vehicle's title for certain things, such as selling your vehicle.
